Why do some autistic people think that Autism is the next step in human evolution?
And why do some asexual people think that Asexuality is the next step in human evolution?
First let me talk about Asexuality as the next step… For a mutation, beneficial or otherwise, to be passed down the members of the species that has the mutation has to procreate…ie: Have sex. Which…Is something few asexuals have… So..Even if Asexuality is a mutation..It’s not going to get passed on prolifically enough, and those who don’t have it aren’t going to die without it… So..No. Asexuality is not the next step of human evolution….Not to mention the fact asexuality is a very dynamic term and is highly unlikely to be genetic…
Now Autism. Yes autism, at least the higher functioning sort, has many benefits in today’s world. But humans are still, and will always be very social creatures. Autistic people tend to fail at socialising. As such it’s difficult for them to have relationships, and therefore difficult to have sex and procreate (in no way impossible mind you!). Also those without autism aren’t dying without autism, and are procreating more often than those with autism. So..Same deal; not the next step.
However… Some traits in both autism and asexuality can be beneficial… So if enough autistics and asexuals pass on their traits through procreation or education, then they can contribute to the next step of human evolution…Whatever it may be. That is if it even comes at all.
Natural selection is whereby a species improves itself through beneficial mutation, if the mutation helps a member to survive long enough to procreate then obviously that trait is passed on to it’s progeny. And they’ll survive long enough to procreate.
Humans, however, has developed technology to help us survive. So even those with “bad” genes can survive to pass on their genetic code… I somehow doubt we’ll see humans evolve.
